SAN ANTONIO – Monday will mark one year since Det. Benjamin Marconi was shot and killed in the line of duty.
Marconi was writing a ticket when a man walked up and shot him outside Public Safety Headquarters. He was a 20-year veteran of the force and left behind two children.
Marconi’s death marked the beginning of a tragic streak for first responders in San Antonio – in May, firefighter Scott Deem was killed battling a four-alarm fire, and in June officer Miguel Moreno was killed and his partner, Julio Cavazos, was injured in a shooting just north of downtown.
In February, Otis McKane was indicted on a capital murder charge in connection with the shooting of Marconi.
Bexar County District Attorney Nico LaHood said that he will try the case himself, and review the case before deciding whether to pursue the death penalty.
