SAN ANTONIO – The friends and family of a grandmother and her grandson killed in a house fire in South Bexar County last week gathered Monday evening to cope with their loss.

About two dozen people returned to the scene of the fire where Mary Hernandez, 80, and Eloy Mitchell, 6, were killed.

The two were inseparable during life.

Neighbor Miguel Avila said he tried to use a hose to put out the flames to no avail. The images and pain of his loss are still very raw.

“I couldn’t get in the house, near the house, I was with my water hose to do whatever I could,” he said. “We live next door so we actually have to drive right by the house where everything took place.”

It is a daily reminder that he said is going to take time to heal.  Since the fire, prayers and messages of support have poured in from strangers all over the country.

The loss is going to take a toll on the family this holiday season. The charred home was a meeting point for them.

“We would have Thanksgiving here and then at her brother’s house. It's going to be a difficult time for all of us,” he said.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
