Man shot, critically wounded while detaining car burglary suspects

Neighbor, witness describe scene on Henderson Pass

SAN ANTONIO – A 22-year-old man was shot after he tried to detain two car burglars that he confronted Wednesday night outside an apartment complex on the city's North Side, police said.

The victim, Edgar Gonzalez, suffered a gunshot wound to the stomach and was taken to University Hospital in critical condition, police said.

When officers arrived at the Sedona Ranch Apartments in the 17600 block of Henderson Pass just before 10:30 p.m., they found Gonzalez in the parking lot.

Gonzalez's brother told police that they heard the victim's truck alarm going off and went to investigate, police said.

The brothers found two men who were walking in the area and detained them, police said.

When Gonzalez's brother went back to their apartment to check on a female, he heard gunshots and came back outside to discover that his brother had been shot, police said.

Two men who matched the description of the burglars were arrested.

Ares Aponte-Rodriguez, 18 (pictured), and Gerardo Adrian Santillan, 19, were charged with aggravated robbery and are being held in the Bexar County Jail in lieu of $75,000 bail.

Police said it appeared that several vehicles were burglarized in the apartment complex.
