Neighbors concerned more violence to come after man shot, killed for his shoes on city's East Side

Shooting reported in 2900 block of Rigsby Avenue

SAN ANTONIO – A man in his late 20s or early 30s was shot to death Thursday morning on the city's East Side.

The shooting was reported around 11:45 a.m. in the 2900 block of Rigsby Avenue.

Police Chief William McManus said it appears that the victim's shoes were taken during the shooting.

The victim was taken to a hospital in critical condition, but died hours later.

No arrests have been made.

What residents in the area are saying:

"My daughter stays out here. She plays out here. She goes to her friends, back and forth, and I don't want there to be an event where she accidentally gets shot over somebody's stupidity," Demetrica Benton said.

"Back in the day, they were just beating them up and taking their shoes," Tammy Pinson said.

"I would just say let them have it (shoes). Save your life. Your life is worth more than a pair of shoes," said Hubert Brown, an outreach worker for Stand Up SA, which is a program designed to prevent violence.

Fast Fact:

Acording to the San Antonio Police Department's Crime Tracker map, since the beginning of this year, there have been two homicides within a two mile radius, and that's not including the one that happened Thursday. There have also been two dozen aggravated assaults in the area.
