Customers forced to do business elsewhere after Natalia Post Office building catches fire

NATALIA, Texas – A post office in Medina County caught fire after a utility pole fell on top of it Friday afternoon.

The fire happened around 5 p.m. in Natalia, about 30 miles southwest of San Antonio.

“My Facebook had a feed, and it said the Natalia Post Office is burning from a pole. And I was, like, 'How does that even happen? What do you mean? That doesn’t happen here,'” said Lauren Maleske, local business owner and post office customer.

One firefighter was hurt battling the flames when a piece of sheetrock fell on top of him. He was taken to a San Antonio-area hospital for treatment and is expected to be OK.

According to the Natalia Volunteer Fire Department chief, there was damage to the post office and the mail inside.

“All of our family. We come here every day, especially just to get our normal stuff done and our daily business," Maleske said. “Every day, I am here by 11 and so is everybody else. It is packed at 11.”

It's still unclear how the pole was knocked down in the first place.

“There is not a lot of locations here. We would have to build something and that would take a lot of time and money," Maleske said.
