SAN ANTONIO – Arrested for one robbery, a San Antonio man faces another charge after the victim of a different crime recognized him on the news.

Police arrested John Paul Portillo, 26, for the July 21 aggravated robbery of a cashier at the Express Food Mart # 3 on in the 1100 block of Ferndale Avenue.

Investigators say Portillo attacked a cashier after he tried unsuccessfully to withdraw cash from an ATM. The cashier was choked, hit and had her hair pulled, according to the arrest affidavit.

She told police Portillo showed her a knife in his waistband and threatened her.

After forcing the cashier to open the register, Portillo took the cash and threatened the woman again, according to the affidavit. After she begged him to leave her alone, Portillo took off.

Then on Thursday, according to the affidavit, the cashier called a detective after she saw Portillo's face on the news for the robbery of an elderly person.

The cashier told the detective she recognized Portillo as soon as she saw his face, and her blood ran cold.

The detective wrote in the affidavit that he had compared surveillance images from the food mart robbery and another, and it appeared that it was the same person in both cases.

Investigators also interviewed Portillo at the Bexar County Jail, where the detective said Portillo confessed to robbing the cashier.
