Driver hops curb, hits 4 people waiting for VIA bus; 6 hospitalized

4 critically injured, cause of crash under investigation

SAN ANTONIO – Four people waiting for a VIA bus were hit by a driver who lost control of their car Tuesday morning, police said.

Authorities were called to Culebra and Zarzamora roads just after 11 a.m. for a major crash. San Antonio Police Department spokesman Carlos Ortiz said the driver was turning the corner and, for unknown reasons, lost control of their car, hopping a curb and striking four people sitting on the VIA bus bench.

The car came to a stop on a concrete embankment.

Ortiz said SAPD's Traffic Investigations Division is investigating how fast the driver was going and why they lost control of the car.

Four people were taken to the hospital with critical injuries and two people in the were transported with non-life-threatening injuries.

Ortiz said the scene is very fluid and that there were few answers about the cause of the crash, adding that the driver is cooperating with authorities.

Several people witnessed the incident and are being interviewed by investigators.

"If, indeed, it turns out there was something more, yes, charges could be pending," Ortiz said. "What those charges are, that's going to be determined by the Traffic Investigative Unit."
