People who decorate for Christmas early are happier, expert says

Decorations can bring back good feelings of childhood

Are you one of those people who rushes at the last minute to get your tree up before Santa comes down the chimney? Or are you one of those who's already pulling out the decorations as soon as you toss out your pumpkins? If you're the latter, you may be the happier person.

Psychoanalyst Steve McKeown told UNILAD that putting up Christmas decorations early can bring back happy feelings from your youth.

"In a world full of stress and anxiety, people like to associate to things that make them happy and Christmas decorations evoke those strong feelings of the childhood," McKeown said.

However, McKeown said there could be some darker reasons for loving the holiday. Some people may decorate early to compensate for past neglect or disappointment. And a few who are truly obsessed with Christmas may be using it as a form of escapism. But they are the exceptions.

McKeown believes Christmas lovers are generally happier than the grinches of the world.

A study published in the Journal of Environmental Psychology found there's another reason to deck the halls early. The study found that people with Christmas decorations on their homes were thought to be friendlier and more sociable.
