Former South San ISD superintendent named Houston ISD interim superintendent

Dr. Abelardo Saavedra takes top spot after district held vote on Thursday

SAN ANTONIO – Former South San Antonio Superintendent Dr. Abelardo Saavedra has been named interim superintendent at the Houston Independent School District, KSAT 12's sister station KPRC reports.

Saavedra had previously announced his retirement after serving as the top administrator for the district since 2014.

HISD held a vote on Thursday to replace the district's interim superintendent. Dr. Grenita Lathan was relieved of her duties after a motion passed 5-4, to be effective Oct. 15.

Saavedra is credited with guiding South San ISD through a turbulent few years, including state-appointed conservatorship after the district failed to properly manage its finances and operations. The conservator was removed in January.

Saavedra will be superintendent for a six-month term and then month-to-month after, KPRC said.

Lathan will remain with HISD as the chief academic officer. She will also have an opportunity to apply for the superintendent job.
