SEGUIN, Texas – A man is facing a murder charge in connection with the fatal shooting of a 38-year-old man in Seguin on Saturday night.
Police were called to a home in the 600 block of Bowie Street around 6 p.m. but the victim, 38-year-old Jesse Valdez Sr., was not there. Police said someone drove Valdez to Guadalupe Regional Medical Center, where he was then flown to San Antonio Military Medical Center in critical condition. Police said he died from his injuries late Saturday night.
Police said 47-year-old Santos Reina is facing a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in connection with the shooting. The charge was upgraded to murder after Valdez died.
Police said Reina had a "dating relationship" with Valdez's mother.
“There was some type of disturbance and argument that transpired before then,” said Officer Tanya Brown, a Seguin PD spokesperson.
Reina was also charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon because more people were present during the shooting, police said.
“The aggravated assault charge comes from, evidently, he pointed the weapon at someone before the shooting happened,” Brown said.
Police have not released a motive for the shooting.
Brown said the probe into the murder is still underway, adding, "It takes time to piece these together, and so I just want to be cautious about what we put out to make sure that it is accurate.”
Reina is in the Guadalupe County Jail. His bonds are set at $100,000 for the aggravated assault with a deadly weapon charge and $200,000 for the murder charge.
