SAFD: Firefighter OK after partially falling through roof while fighting bar fire

Fire occurred at Club Essence in 1000 block of N. Main St.

SAN ANTONIO – A veteran San Antonio firefighter was not hurt after he partially fell through the roof while fighting a fire at a bar just north of downtown early Tuesday morning.

The fire was called in just before 9 a.m. at Club Essence, located in the 1000 block of North Main not far from West Euclid Avenue and Interstate 35.

According to Joe Arrington, a public information officer for the San Antonio Fire Department, firefighters arrived to find flames spreading from the outside of the building to the roof. The fire was put out in roughly 10 to 15 minutes, Arrington said.

Arrington said an unidentified veteran firefighter did partially fall through the lean-to of the building after he stepped onto a tent portion. He was evaluated by EMS crews but was not hurt.

The fire caused only minimal damage to the structure, fire officials said. It did not spread to any of the surrounding buildings. Arson investigators have now been called in to help determine the fire's origin.

Arrington said two people were outside the building at the time of the fire and were evaluated for minor smoke inhalation. They were not taken to a hospital.

According to the San Antonio Fire Department website, as many as 16 units answered the call.
