A standoff with an armed man continued through the night at a home on the city's North Side, San Antonio police said Friday.
The standoff is taking place at a home in the 100 block of Laurelwood Drive, not far from Blanco and Basse roads.
According to San Antonio Police Chief William McManus, officers arrived at the scene after receiving a disturbance call shortly before 5 p.m. Thursday. Police said they confronted the 35-year-old man, who is believed to be armed with a handgun. Officers backed off after the man threatened to hurt himself and officers, police said.
McManus said the man who lives at the home has barricaded himself in a shed and has refused to leave. Two children inside the home, however, were safely removed from the premises.
Police overnight have been attempting to coax the man out, but he has yet to oblige.
"I'm not certain how soon this is going to end, it didn’t sound very promising as I listen to the negotiators," McMaus said. "We’re working very hard to get him out. Our goal here is to bring him out safely, so nobody gets hurt.”
Police said early Friday that negotiations are still ongoing and they are still hopeful for a peaceful resolution. Authorities are asking people to avoid the area.
