SAN ANTONIO – Lightning struck a home in Stone Oak late Sunday night, causing a house fire on the city's far North Side, San Antonio firefighters said.
The fire was reported just after 11:30 p.m. at a home in the 500 block of Mesa Loop, not far from both Hardy Oak Boulevard and Stone Oak Parkway.
"Bang! We had this huge lightning strike. It lit up the whole house. You couldn't see shadows anywhere," said David Beere, who lives across the street from the home hit by lightning.
Firefighters said they quickly put out the fire, but that there was a lot of smoke and a large-sized hole in the roof.
"He could hear the crackling of the fire, but couldn't see the fire until he saw the smoke coming through the vent. And when he looked through the vent, he could see the flames," Beere said.
Investigators believe lightning struck the home, and insulation in the attic caught fire.
Everyone inside the home did make it safely out.
Beere is opening his home to his neighbor now in need.
"You just never think its going to strike your house or next to your house," he said.
Damage to the home is estimated at $10,000 to $15,000.
