3-year-old boy critical after apparent accidental shooting

Police say relative drove wounded boy to emergency room

SAN ANTONIO – A 3-year-old boy is in critical condition after an apparent accidental shooting Saturday morning.

A San Antonio Police Department spokesman says the boy apparently shot himself after getting is hands on a gun.

Police say a relative drove the injured child to the University Hospital emergency room around 10:30 a.m.

Officer Douglas Greene says the boy suffered a gunshot, and is alive but in critical condition.

"The child gained access to the gun, and it appears he shot himself in the upper body," Greene said.

The shooting happened at an apartment in the 2500 block of Babcock.

Police say the boy's wound appears to be from a handgun.

Detectives are now investigating the shooting.
