SAN ANTONIO – A teenager charged with killing a man in a home invasion testified Wednesday in his own defense.
"I know it was his right to shoot at me, I was completely in the wrong," Jonathan Perales, 19, testified.
Perales said he was high on drugs when he gained entry into the Universal City home of Clayton Robinson, 51, during the early morning hours of Oct. 10, 2017.
The defendant said that after making two trips from the home to his car with items from Robinson's home, he returned for a third time and approached the master bedroom.
"I heard the gentleman screaming, yelling, 'Get out of my house!'" Perales said. "I was by the back door, and I said I was going."
Perales said the next thing he heard was two gunshots.
"Initially, just out of reaction, I guess, I fired two shots back," he testified.
Robinson was killed. Perales suffered two gunshot wounds.
"I was hit with two gunshots, one to my chest and one to my arm," he said.
If Perales is found guilty of capital murder, he faces life in prison without the possibility of parole since prosecutors are not seeking the death penalty.
Closing arguments and jury deliberations are set for Thursday morning in Judge Melissa Skinner's 290th District Court.
