Agents thwart 2 attempts to smuggle narcotics into U.S., CBP says

EDINBURG, TexasCustoms and Border Protection said it stopped two instances of attempted narcotics smuggling into the United States in the last week.

The CBP said after being alerted by the Department of Public Safety of a possible border incursion Sunday, agents located a Ford Expedition and tried to make contact with the driver, but as they approached, the driver began to drive erratically.

Agents said when the vehicle stopped, the driver ran from the truck into thick brush, abandoning the SUV with more than 1,100 pounds of marijuana worth more than $900,000.

The CBP said earlier in the week, agents responded to reports of a speeding gray Jeep driving near La Paloma. When agents arrived in the area, they found the Jeep on a makeshift raft being ferried back to Mexico as several bundles were unloaded from the vehicle onto another vehicle parked on the Mexican riverbank, the CBP said.

It's unclear whether Mexican authorities responded to the area.
