Alamo kicks off events commemorating siege

2017 marks 181st anniversary of Battle of the Alamo

SAN ANTONIO – People filled Alamo Plaza Thursday morning to kick off the annual celebration commemorating the Battle of the Alamo.

The Mexican Army began its siege on the Alamo 181 years ago.

"The rebels captured the town, and along with the town, captured this compound called the Alamo," a member of the Alamo’s living historian said.

The historians began by reading about the siege – a historical account that illustrates what happened during the siege.

The reading will continue through March 6.

Several other events are planned over the next two weeks, including new ones for 2017.

"We also debut our new walking guided tour, Ian Oldaker said, the Alamo's chief operating officer.

On Friday at 10 a.m., there will be a ride for the Texas Independence.

On March 3, there will be an evening with the heroes, from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

Being that weekend, more events will be held – on March 4 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. the Alamo will host the Fiddle Fest, which is free and open to the public.

Lastly, on March 6 at 6 p.m. there will be Dusk at the Alamo.
