All SAPD officers to carry overdose reversal drug by end of 2018

SAN ANTONIO – The San Antonio Police Department joined the Opioid Prevention Task Force a year ago, with the mission to be proactive and evolve as a department that helps save lives and prevents opioid overdose deaths.

FAST FACTS:

  • SAPD is one of the first departments to equip officers with a lifesaving drug known as naloxone, a nasal spray that reverses the effects of an overdose.

  • Eighty percent of SAPD officers will be trained and equipped with naloxone by the end of September.

  • The entire Police Department will be trained by the end of 2018.

  • The Police Department is also doing its part to train neighboring law enforcement agencies, constables and campus police at several schools.

What Police Chief William McManus is saying:

"It's a problem everywhere in the country. San Antonio in no exception. At any moment, an officer could come across someone's who's (overdosed) on opioids."
