ALS Association looking past Ice Bucket Challenge

SAN ANTONIO – Over 880 nonprofit organizations are coming together for the Big Give SA on Tuesday.

Big Give SA is a one-day fundraising event with a goal to raise $4 million for participating organizations.

One of the organizations taking part, is the ALS Association of Texas.

Last year, the association benefited from the famous Ice Bucket Challenge which raked in over $100 million nationally.

Now, the association is looking to move beyond the bucket and turn what executive director Tanner Hockensmith calls, "a moment into a movement."

"Something like the Big Give in San Antonio gives almost what a microcosm of what the Ice Bucket Challenge was," said Hockensmith. "It gives the community a chance to not only rally around the ALS Association, but to rally around all of these nonprofits doing great things for the area."

Eighty-five percent of the money raised by the ALS Association's Texas chapter stays here in San Antonio and Texas and helps fund its ALS clinic and other patient needs.
