AUSTIN – State House Bill 337, or Kali's Law, which was created in honor of a teen who died in 2012 after she was thrown from a boat and struck by the propeller, passed in the state Senate with a 26-to-5 vote.
The bill, which was named after 16-year-old Kali Gorzell, will now head to Gov. Greg Abbott's office.

The law requires anyone operating a boat less than 26 feet in length to be attached to what’s called a kill switch, which is a safety feature most boats have that shuts off the engine if the driver is knocked down or out of reach.
Gorzell’s family attended Tuesday’s meeting at the State Capitol. They expressed hope that the law will save lives.
