Kendall County DA cracking down on car burglars, threatens stiff penalties

Boerne police arrest man connected to 15 overnight car burglaries

BOERNE, Texas – The Kendall County district attorney is cracking down on those who are breaking into vehicles by threatening stiff penalties.

It did not take Boerne police a long time to find a man they believe is responsible for burglarizing at least 15 vehicles overnight.

"He is the perfect example of why we have this strong policy," said Nicole Bishop, Kendall County district attorney.

Police said they received a 911 call just before 2 a.m. for a man breaking into cars in the Woods of Frederick Creek. When officers arrived they found a car that was reported stolen in the area with items inside that officers said appeared to be stolen.

Ruben Morales, 27, was arrested by 6:30 a.m. and police said he confessed to burglarizing cars in Boerne, Bexar County and San Antonio.

“It's a combination of a lot of sunglasses, car keys or sets of keys, some radio equipment, like, amplifiers, some clothing items, shoes, things like that, that people naturally leave in the car,” said Lt. Steve Perez, with the Boerne Police Department.

Bishop said those committing crimes in Kendall County aren't even from the area.

"With this guy that just committed these crimes, if it's a misdemeanor offense, then, yes, he will be offered jail time. It's a Class A misdemeanor, which is up to a year in jail. But that depends on if it's a first offense. If it's a second or third offense and it becomes a felony, at that point, we have a broader range of punishment to pick from," she said.

Morales has been charged with unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, possession of heroin, and burglaries of motor vehicles. He remains behind bars in the Kendall County Jail.
