Chase involving BCSO deputies ends in crash, arrest in West Bexar County

Man, 39, arrested; woman suffers serious leg injury

SAN ANTONIO – A brief chase involving sheriff's deputies and a stolen pickup truck ended in a crash and an arrest Wednesday morning in West Bexar County.

Sheriff Javier Salazar said when deputies arrived at a home in the 13800 block of Turtle Cross for a violent disturbance call, a Dodge Ram pickup with a man and a woman inside it sped away.

Not knowing if the woman was in danger, deputies ensued in a chase, Salazar said.

At one point during the 4-mile chase, the pickup truck hit another vehicle and a sign, Salazar said. No one was injured.

The pickup kept going until it lost a wheel, crashed and came to a stop near the intersection of West Military Drive near Creek Knoll, Salazar said.

The driver, 38-year-old man Andrew John Herrera, who deputies believe was under the influence of drugs, was arrested on several outstanding felony warrants, Salazar said. Herrera has a "substantial" criminal history and will face charges of possession of narcotics, possession of stolen property with a felony enhancement and possibly intoxication assault in connection with the incident.

The woman suffered "substantial" injuries to a leg and was taken to University Hospital. Salazar said they will interview the woman to determine her involvement in the incident.

Salazar said deputies found some stolen property, including some belonging to law enforcement, in the pickup.

The home where deputies were dispatched is well known to BCSO for incidents involving weapons, Salazar said.
