SAN ANTONIO – The San Antonio City Council has unanimously approved the process for how the Alamo City will choose its next mayor.
The confirmation hearings for Mayor Julian Castro to become the secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development began Tuesday and the city will now have to find a way to fill his position when Castro is officially installed.

Within seven days of his confirmation, the city clerk will ask council members to submit letters of interest.
They'll have three business days to submit their letters and can withdraw at any time during the process.
Then the council will vote to select the new mayor from the City Council.
The council member selected will take office upon Castro's submission of a letter of resignation or upon being sworn in as HUD secretary, whichever is first.
