Convicted hit man gets stay of execution for second time

Rolando Ruiz carried out murder-for-hire plot that left SA woman dead

SAN ANTONIO – A convicted hit man from San Antonio was granted a stay of execution Friday by the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals.

Rolando Ruiz was found guilty of collecting $2,000 to kill Theresa Rodriguez in 1992.

Rodriguez was the wife of Michael Rodriguez, who was among a group of known as the Texas 7 that escaped the Connally Unit in 2000.

Michael Rodriguez was executed for his role in the fatal shooting of an Irving police officer while the group was on the run following their escape.

This is the second time Ruiz has gotten a stay of execution. The first stay was issued in July 2007.
