Sex offender living in Bexar County facing new charges

Robert Smith, 70, convicted of sex crimes in Missouri, Florida

SAN ANTONIO – A man convicted of sex crimes in two states moved to Bexar County and registered as a sex offender. Now, he's wanted on a new charge.

Robert Smith, 70, was recently indicted on charges he failed to comply with sex offender registration conditions and absconding from supervision, Deputy U.S. Marshal Chris Bozeman said.

The Texas Sex Offender Registry shows Smith was convicted of sexually abusing a 49-year-old woman in Missouri in 1994. He was also convicted of sexual battery in Florida in 2001. It is that conviction that led to Smith being required to register as a sex offender quarterly for the rest of his life.

Terms of the registration include the offender reporting his or her address to law enforcement. That information is made public online. The site says Smith reported to the Bexar County Sheriff's Office. It lists him as absconded.

"(Smith's) last known place of residence was on the Northwest Side of San Antonio," Bozeman said.

If you have any information on Smith's whereabouts, call the Lone Star Fugitive Task Force at 210-657-8500.
