Man suspected in Valero assault arrested

SAN ANTONIO – A 30-year-old man was arrested Monday night in connection with an assault at a Northwest Side Valero.

Anthony Q. Johnson (pictured, above) surrendered to police, officials said.

The assault happened Feb. 17 at the Valero convenience store at 13555 Babcock Road.

According to an arrest affidavit, Johnson and another man were arguing inside the store when Johnson followed the man to his car, pulled him out of the vehicle and punched him several times.

The victim suffered severe injuries and was taken to University Hospital in critical condition. According to the affidavit, the man was treated for a cerebral contusion, skull fractures, acute respiratory failure and other injuries.

Johnson left in a car with a woman and police used surveillance video to get the license plate number. The car was in the woman's name and police said she gave detectives Johnson's name.

Johnson was charged with aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury.
