Critical evidence disclosure at issue in child sex trial

Former H-E-B vice president facing child pornography charges

SAN ANTONIO – The contentious trial between the state and a former H-E-B executive continued Monday.

Lawyers for John Morgan Campbell, using complex computer-generated picture identification numbers, questioned whether they were provided discovery information from the state to which they were entitled as Campbell’s trial entered its second week Monday.

Campbell, 66, was fired from his position at the grocery store chair after images of child pornography were discovered on his company-issued electronic devices in early 2014.

He was charged in a 53-count indictment with promotion of child pornography.

Prosecutors testified Monday that the district attorney’s office provided Campbell’s defense team with what is called "discovery evidence" as early as 2015 when their case was being prepared.

“I unlocked the computer in our conference room in the DA’s office and left her alone with the discovery in this file, which included child pornography,” prosecutor Edward Flores testified.

Flores was one of the prosecutors originally assigned to the Campbell case.

Defense expert witnesses are expected to testify when the trial resumes Tuesday in Judge Catherine Torres-Stahl’s 175 District Court.
