SAN ANTONIO – A proposal to cut deputy constable positions in Bexar County will no longer be included in the proposed budget for FY 2018-2019.
Bexar County Judge Nelson Wolff sent a letter this week to the Bexar County manager requesting that funding for the 15 jobs that were being considered for elimination, in addition to eight justice of the peace clerks also on the chopping block, be restored.

Some residents weren't happy about the cuts, fearing it would negatively impact their neighborhoods.
Commissioner Kevin Wolff said he supported them because the need for constables is decreasing, and the money used to fund those positions could be put toward the proposal of hiring 16 new deputies for the Sheriff's Office.
"Controversy about proposed cuts to constables' offices has created discord between the constables and the Bexar County Sheriff's Office. This conflict is ultimately harmful to the justice system," said Judge Wolff in his letter.
The $1.71 billion proposed budget is set to be voted on Sept. 11.
There is a public hearing on the proposed budget on Sept. 4 at 10 a.m. during Commissioner's Court.
