Drunken driver sentenced in deadly wrong-way crash

Richard Sanchez pleads no contest

SAN ANTONIO – A drunken driver received a 30-year prison sentence for heading the wrong way on Interstate 35 in January, causing a crash that killed a teenager and injured members of his family.

Richard Sanchez, 50, pleaded no contest to intoxication manslaughter and intoxication assault in connection with the wreck.

Miguel Hernandez, 18, who had muscular dystrophy, was traveling with his family from Mexico to Georgia when he was killed in the crash.

Sanchez struck the Hernandez family's vehicle head-on.

Sanchez was on probation for driving while intoxicated when the crash took place, officials said.
