East Side home where paraplegic man is shot was scene of previous shooting

In most recent shooting, man, 36, suffered head wound

SAN ANTONIO – An East Side home where a man was shot Thursday night was the scene of a previous shooting.

San Antonio police said that, in the most recent case, a 36-year-old paraplegic man was shot in the head while lying in bed.

The gunfire came from outside the home in the 100 block of Dafoste Avenue, according to officers at the scene.

Police received a 911 call around 10 p.m. for shots fired, and later they learned that the man had been hit.

"We just heard the shots. Boom! Boom! Boom! Boom! So it wasn't an AK (-47 assault rifle). It was a regular gun," said Comido Smith, who lives next door.

Smith and his wife were sleeping inside their home when the loud gunfire rang out.

He said other neighbors rushed inside the victim's home to help.

"This neighborhood is retired teachers, Kelly Field workers, and all of this here is just young people coming in with this mess," Smith said.

According to Smith and other neighbors, the victim of the shooting Thursday night had been targeted before at a different location.

They said the previous shooting left him unable to walk.

"He was strapped to a chair, basically, because he was paralyzed from when he got hit before," Smith said.

This time, the man suffered what police described as critical injuries.

His family's home was the scene of another shooting that KSAT 12 News covered in December 2016, when a another man was hit by gunfire and died on the front lawn.

Smith doesn't believe any of the violence in his neighborhood is random.

"And you got to wonder, what's so vindictive about it?" he said. "Here in the neighborhood, we're just tired of it. I mean, what else can we do?"

Police have not yet released a motive for the latest shooting.

As of late Friday morning, they had not made any arrests and said they had no information on the shooter.
