East Side rallies to reduce violence

Event comes after multiple shootings

SAN ANTONIO – Community members gathered on the East Side to promote a more loving and harmonious neighborhood.

The event was held after the area’s eight homicides since Jan. 1.

Community leaders held a market expo and there were potential employers there as well.

The goal was to bring people together to discuss their differences, instead of resorting to violence.

“Basically we want to take something that's been known as a negative thing in the community, beef but we want to turn it into something positive,” said community organizer Andrew Underwood. “So now what it is brothers edifying and empowering freedom. We want to be free from drugs, free from gang activity, free from poverty."

Organizers said they have another event planned next Saturday.
