SAN ANTONIO – An event will take place Saturday for those looking to safely dispose of expired medications and household hazardous waste.
Officials with San Antonio Water System said SAWS and the city of San Antonio are cosponsoring the collection event, which will take place from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Alamo City Church at 6500 Interstate 35 North.

It will be the last scheduled MedDropSA event of 2018, officials said.
"MedDropSA helps keep pharmaceuticals out of the environment and can help curb abuse and avoid accidental poisoning," SAWS said in a release. "Since 2009, more than 23 tons of medicines have been collected."
Officials said residents can dispose of unused or out-of-date medicines safely at no cost through MedDropSA. Events are in partnership with San Antonio’s Household Hazardous Waste Mobile Collection.
Attendees stay in their cars, dropping off unwanted medications, officials said. Attendees can also drop off household hazardous waste with the city's HHW Mobile Collection area.
Officials said to bring medicines to the event, dump pills out of the plastic bottles and into a plastic Ziploc bag. Officials added that liquids and aerosols can stay in their original containers, but remove labels.
Officials said medical "sharps" will not be accepted. Some examples of sharps include needles, syringes, lancets (which are also called "fingerstick" devices), and auto injectors, including epinephrine and insulin pens and infusion sets.
There are no residency requirements to drop off private-use prescription or other medications for MedDropSA. Officials said household hazardous waste disposal does require a recent CPS Energy bill showing that attendees are a solid waste rate payer.
