Federal appeals court rejects death row inmate's appeal in 1996 rape, murder case

Carlos Trevino only 1 of 4 convicted men in case on death row

SAN ANTONIO – A federal appeals court rejected the appeal of a San Antonio man who was sentenced to die for the gang rape and murder of a teenage girl more than 20 years ago.

A Fifth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals panel turned down arguments that Carlos Trevino’s trial attorneys were deficient.

Attorneys argued that Trevino's legal team did not show jurors his mother's drinking while she was pregnant with him, leaving him with fetal alcohol disorder, which could have contributed to his violent behavior.

Trevino was convicted for the 1996 attack on Linda Salinas at San Antonio Park. He is one of four men convicted in the crime but the only one on death row.
