Fundraiser held for 7-year-old girl shot in head last Saturday

Mother says child to be released from ICU soon

KERRVILLE, Texas – The mother of a Kerrville girl who was shot in the head a week ago said her 7-year-old daughter is getting better.

“We waited for a whole day for her to wake up and she finally did,” said Isabel Gebara, the victim’s mother.

Gebara wasn’t sure that her daughter, Mariah, would live after she was shot the night of Oct. 1.

“To see her see me and to be able to tell her that I love her and know that she was hearing it,” Gebara said.

Mariah’s right arm had been paralyzed, but she suddenly was able to grab a crayon.

“She was coloring and out of the blue. She just picked it up and she was so excited,” Gebara said.

On Saturday, a fundraiser was held to help with Mariah’s medical expenses.

"I went to school with her (Mariah) mother. And when I heard about it, it was just something I wanted to put together,” said Patrick Baldwin, fundraiser organizer.

Gebara said the fundraiser was more than just the food they sold to raise money to help pay for those medical expenses. She said it’s all the support and prayers from family and friends.

Gebara said Mariah has come so far, but still has much more to go. Her daughter will spend several more weeks in the hospital and in intense therapy.

“Things are looking better,” Gebara said. One week and she’s already getting out of the ICU.”

Kerrville police are still investigating the shooting and ask anyone with information to come forward and call them.
