The second phase of the project will focus on a 4-mile stretch of Highway 281 in northern Bexar County to the Comal County line.

The expansion project will build two new northbound lanes, two new southbound lanes and two high-occupancy vehicle lanes. In addition, varying auxiliary/transition lanes and new frontage roads in each direction will be built for a total of 10 lanes.

The expansion project is divided into two separate segments:

Phase I, from Loop 1604 to Stone Oak Parkway, which began in summer 2017 and is expected to be finished ahead of schedule in 2020.

Phase II, from Stone Oak Parkway to Borgfeld Drive (Comal County line), with construction beginning March 2019 and estimated to be completed by 2022, weather permitting.
