Gunshot fired during burglary at apartment near UTSA

Burglar also targeted second apartment at The Outpost, police say

SAN ANTONIO – A burglar who targeted at least two units in an apartment complex near UTSA's main campus fired a gun during one of the break-ins, San Antonio police said.

Officers were called around 6:30 a.m. Tuesday to The Outpost apartments in the 6800 block of UTSA Boulevard, where they found a bullet hole in the wall near a window in a ground-floor unit.

The people who live there told officers they woke up to a noise and saw someone attempting to climb in through an open window.

"There was a window that was left open," said Sgt. James Lint, of the San Antonio Police Department. "The residents inside saw that and got scared. When they screamed, one shot was discharged while they were running out of the apartment."

The burglar ran off, too, Lint said.

While officers were checking on the welfare of a next-door neighbor, they discovered the burglar also had been to that apartment, Lint said.

"Another situation where a door was left open. The suspect was able to make entry. Some items were missing," Lint said.

Another officer at the scene confirmed that cellphones were taken from the apartment.

The burglar, though, left empty-handed from the unit where the gunshot was fired.

According to police, the break-ins may not be isolated.

Lint said the apartment complex, which is occupied mainly by UTSA students, has been experiencing a rash of burglaries.

He said it's possible the same person may be committing the crimes.

"Students are not locking doors, not locking windows, not locking their vehicles. It makes it easier for the suspects," he said.

Police are encouraging everyone to avoid opening a window of opportunity for crooks by securing their property.
