Historic downtown house moves to new neighborhood

The Scott House on 4th street moves ahead of potential new parking garage construction

A historic house was lifted from its foundation Wednesday and moved about a mile away.

The Scott House, located in the 200 block of 4th street downtown, is now the newest addition to the Dignowity Hill area.

The house was moved by lifts and trucks, but Ruby Casteel and her husband, Bruce, are the real force behind the house's move.

"This is a rescue home," said Casteel. "It was posted on the San Antonio Historic Preservation site, and I had the lot and I thought, 'Oh this home is perfect.'"

The home was located on a property owned by the First Baptist Church. That space will soon become a six-story parking space for the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts.

Though the house only moved about a mile, it had to travel about three miles in order to avoid power lines and other obstacles.

Casteel said it's a journey she and her husband were ready to take.

"It's just a love for going back to an old time. And it just gave me that feeling," said Casteel.

The Scott House was built in 1885, but the Casteels are still researching its previous owners and history.

"It looks like one of them was also related or a Texas Ranger so that caught my curiosity as well because my husband is a retired chief of the Texas Rangers," said Casteel.

They want to move in someday and remodel it, but still keep the home's nostalgic touches.

"It has that old-timey feel with the porch and a lot of the old features in the home," said Casteel.

A spokeswoman from the Tobin Center told KSAT the timeline for the construction of the parking garage has not yet been decided. She said they are still waiting on approval for construction.
