Hundreds attend citizenship ceremony at Trinity University

Nearly 400 people from all over world swear allegiance to US in ceremony

SAN ANTONIO – Nearly 400 people from all over the world swore their allegiance to the United States Thursday in a citizenship ceremony at Trinity University.

All of them first had to be legal permanent residents. Green cards usually are obtained through U.S. citizens petitioning on behalf of family members, but Congress is considering a merit-based immigration system.

The priority has been reuniting families, but that may be limited to spouses and children who are minors.

Others fall under the employment or investor category, which could see changes favoring English-speaking, highly-skilled workers.

"Well, I didn't speak a word of English when I came here, and I learned and they've given me an opportunity to live in this wonderful country," said Ingrid Debuck, a new U.S. citizen from Belgium.

"I do think the merit system would work, but at the same time, it has to be fair," new U.S. citizen CG Emilio Lopez said.

It's estimated the proposed changes could result in a 50 percent reduction in legal immigration.
