Indicted Crystal City attorney approved to defend indigent clients

James Jonas OK'd to work in Bexar County courts

SAN ANTONIO – Just over a month after he was indicted by the federal government on bribery and corruption charges, former Crystal City Attorney James Jonas has been given the nod to represent indigent clients in misdemeanor cases in Bexar County courts.

Jonas is registered on what the County Courts call The Wheel, the method the courts use to select attorneys to represent indigent clients in misdemeanor cases.

“In Bexar County, the misdemeanor courts do not require that you report if you’re under indictment or give your criminal history if you’ve been arrested,” according to Michael Young, Bexar County’s chief public defender. “As far as requirements, you just have to be in good standing with the bar and have the requisite number of continuing education hours.”

The incoming president of the San Antonio Bar Association, Robert “Bobby” Barrera, said it’s too soon to talk about not allowing Jonas to be on The Wheel.

“This is merely at the accusatory stage, and it would be hypocritical to say that, because someone accuses you of a crime that therefore he should lose his ability to earn a living,” Barrera said.

Barrera said that to deny Jonas a position on The Wheel goes against the heart of the criminal justice system. “Innocent until proven guilty,” he said.

But Barrera said Jonas’ clients should be made aware of his situation.

The County Court plan places this matter squarely in the laps of the judges. They are expected to meet later this month to review the matter.
