'Lord Voldermort' sent threats to Singaporeans, police say

Writer misspells name of 'Harry Potter' character

People in Singapore have been receiving threatening letters signed by "Lord Voldermort," a police advisory said.

The writer of the letters appears to be referencing -- and misspelling the name of -- Lord Voldemort, the villain in the "Harry Potter" book and film series, Channel NewsAsia reported.

Lee Bee Wah, a member of Parliament for Nee Soon, posted Wednesday a photo of the advisory, which says police have received several reports of citizens receiving letters stamped, "URGENT." In the letters, the sender asks for members of the public to ask a resident to "pay up," or they will face harassment.

The advisory tells residents to "not follow the sender's instruction" or "send any email reply to the sender's email address." Instead, police are urging citizens to file a report and give the letters to police.

Police told Channel NewsAsia Thursday that 15 reports have been made at multiple locations.

Channel NewsAsia obtained a photo of a similar letter.

"My name is Lord Voldermort. I am writing this mail to you because you and your family is about to face disturbing events soon," the letter said.

The writer claimed that the recipient's neighbor owed him several thousand dollars.

"Please help me to urge him to pay me what I am supposed to get or I will start harassing YOUR unit," the letter said.

The sender provided an email address and an Aug. 29 deadline, Channel NewsAsia reported.
