Joint Base San Antonio Air Show flies into town this weekend

Shows scheduled for Saturday, Sunday

The Thunderbirds and other flying acts will take over the San Antonio skies this weekend for the Joint Base San Antonio Air Show.

Among them will be Air Force Major Derrick Pegg, who is part of the 182nd Fighter Squadron at JBSA Kelly Field Annex.

"I love serving my country," he said while showing off his flight gear. "I love serving the state of Texas."

Pegg's team has prepared for this show, which will celebrate the rich military and aviation history in San Antonio.

"Most important part to me, this year, is watching our squadron fly in the aerial demo, as well as the fly by," he said.

Chris Kelly, director of the air show, said it has been years since Kelly Field has hosted an air show and said they have a few surprises up their sleeve.

"We'll have most of the Thunderbirds. We'll have Tora! Tora! Tora! which is the reenactment of the attack on Pearl Harbor," he said. "Also, we'll have an F-35 heritage flight with a P-47 Thunderbolt and a cast of warbirds, which are vintage World War II flyers."

Kelly said they enjoy the opportunity to invite San Antonio to the airfield and showcase Air Force aviation at its best. He expects about 200,000 people to attend each day.

Pegg said he's most excited to share this experience with the people he loves.

"I have three young ones, two of them boys. They had a few chances to go to airshows, but to come to our home station, I'm looking forward to it for the public as well as my kids, he said."

The show will be in San Antonio on Saturday and Sunday. Gates will open at 9 a.m. and close at 5 p.m. Admission is free to the public, but premier seating is available at a cost. You can find more information on the air show's website.
