Judge dismisses Bexar County from lawsuit filed by family of man killed by deputies

SAN ANTONIO – A federal judge has dismissed Bexar County from a lawsuit filed by the family of a man killed by sheriff's deputies in 2015.

The judge found that the family could not show that the county's policy and training were flawed and contributed to the shooting of Gilbert Flores.

The judge also rejected the deputies' claim that they were entitled to "qualified immunity," which shields public officials from liability.

Flores was shot outside his parents' home in far north Bexar County in August 2015. Deputies were called there for a domestic disturbance.

Flores was shot as he had his hands up, apparently surrendering, but with a knife in his hand.

The judge found that was enough evidence to let the case go before a jury, but only the two deputies, Greg Vasquez and Robert Sanchez, would stand trial.
