Jury hears rambling, profanity-laced police interview in killer's punishment phase

Charles Ray Hall admits to neighbor's 2014 murder

SAN ANTONIO – During the punishment phase of the trial of his father’s killer, Lawrence Carroll Jr. said he doubts that convicted killer Charles Ray Hall, 30, is mentally ill.

“I’m from the streets and I know what’s going on,” Carroll said. “My impression was he’s just on drugs.”

Carroll was talking about his impressions after viewing the two-hour interview that detectives conducted with Hall after his arrest.

“They just trying to make the jury feel like something wrong with him, but ain’t nothing wrong with him,” Carroll said.

During the interview, Hall mumbled and shouted profanities. Much of what he said was unintelligible. At one point, he admitted that he shot Carroll.

Hall also admitted to shooting Rogelio Ramos to death outside a Corner Store on the Northeast Side the day before he killed Carroll. He gave police no motive for either killing.

Closing arguments and jury deliberations are set for Wednesday morning in Judge Jefferson Moore’s 186th District Court. Hall is facing a maximum punishment of life in prison.
