Kitchen fire causes $50,000 worth of damage to NE Side home, fire officials say

Fire occurred around 11 p.m. in 6800 block of Avila

SAN ANTONIO – A mother and son were displaced overnight after their cooking efforts resulted in a fire, fire officials said Saturday.

The fire occurred around 11 p.m. at the home in the 6800 block of Avila, which is located not far from Walzem Road on the city's far Northeast Side.

Firefighters said the fire started in the kitchen while the pair were cooking and that they were able to contain it to the kitchen area. The rest of the home had smoke damage, firefighters said.

The mother and son were forced to stay with family elsewhere for the night as a result of the fire. Neither was hurt in the incident.

The damage to the home is estimated to be $50,000.
