Land by Hays Street Bridge to remain open to public

SAN ANTONIO - The San Antonio City Council on Thursday voted 10-1 to approve a proposed land swap at Hays Street Bridge with a developer.

The swap involves the city receiving some land next to the bridge for public use.

In exchange, the developer would get land on Cherry Street near the Alamodome for mixed-use development.

District 2 City Council Art Hall said the controversy needed to be resolved before a new City Council is sworn in next week.

"I remember my first day on the council, I had a controversial issue that the previous council member pushed off to me. And, I had to make a decision, and I did. What I wanted in this particular scenario was to be able to resolve conflict and so that the next council (is given) as smooth of a ride as possible."

A group successfully sued the city this year to ensure the land near the bridge would not be developed into apartments or condos.
