Leon Valley FD raises money for firefighter whose house caught fire

Firefighter making rescue when his house was struck by lightning

SAN ANTONIO – Firefighters in Leon Valley are stepping in to help one of their own. They're raising money for a firefighter whose home caught fire while he was out saving lives.

The money is being generated by a barbecue plate sale.

All the money will help the firefighter whose home was struck by lightning while he was saving a family during a water rescue last month.

Leon Valley Fire Chief Luis Valdez said the event was supposed to be a surprise, but the secret is out.

“Our firefighter answered the phone and somebody said ‘I would like to order some ribs to help the firefighter whose home caught fire.’ And he knew what that was about and he took the order and was kind of embarrassed by it. The surprise is out of the bag,” Valdez said.

Valdez said the Fire Department is keeping the name of the firefighter private.

Firefighters started up the pit to cook 25 racks of ribs about 7 a.m. Saturday. They sold out within hours.

Another 75 racks are set to be cooked and will be sold at $40 apiece.
