SAN ANTONIO – A car burglar who was confronted by a couple while breaking into a vehicle fired two gunshots and then threatened to return before fleeing, San Antonio police said Monday.

According to police, a couple reported that they saw someone breaking into their vehicle and when they confronted him, he fired two separate gunshots.

Police said the suspect fired the first gunshot in the parking lot just before running across the street and firing the second. The victims and other witnesses said they heard the gunshots and heard the man say he was going to “come back after police had left”.

Authorities said while officers were on the scene investigating, another car owner drove up asking to report that his car had been burglarized. The man said he lived in a nearby apartment complex and that someone had gotten into his car by smashing the window with a rock and breaking the door handle. The burglar took some clothes and shoes from his truck, the man said.

Police dusted the man’s car for fingerprints and are trying to determine if it is connected to the shooting. Officers said they believe a connection is likely, but they are looking for hard evidence.

SAPD said no one was hurt in the shooting. A woman told police she slipped just in time, as a bullet which otherwise would have hit her whizzed by her head. Officers found shell casings but did not see any bullet holes in the buildings or anywhere, police said.
