TxDOT prepares San Antonio roads for heavy rain with barricades, signs

Emergency Operations Center to activate with 24-hour roadway surveillance and crews on standby

SAN ANTONIO – Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) crews are preparing for heavy rain expected to affect the San Antonio area from Wednesday evening through Friday.

Crews have been inspecting drainage systems and equipment, clearing debris from culverts and inlets and checking flood-prone areas, including construction sites. TxDOT has also placed barricades and signs in some areas ahead of the storms.

“We’re planning to activate our Emergency Operations Center, which would call for 24-hour surveillance on all roadway conditions,” TxDOT spokesperson Jonathan Cotto said. “Our crews are also prepared to deploy.”

Maintenance crews and HERO trucks will be on standby to assist drivers who need help. TxDOT is urging people to avoid driving in severe weather when possible.

Cotto reminded drivers to “turn around, don’t drown” if they encounter water covering a roadway.

“Any water level above any roadway can be deceiving,” Cotto said. “You never know how truly deep the water can be, and you don’t know what the conditions may be below the water. We don’t know if the surface has been eroded.”

Drivers can find real-time road condition updates through the DriveTexas app or at DriveTexas.org.
