SAN ANTONIO – Families are invited to bring blankets and snacks to the Historic City Cemetery No. 1 on the East Side for a free outdoor screening of “Hocus Pocus.” The event connects Halloween fun with a 19th-century picnicking tradition and ongoing cemetery preservation efforts.
The Picnic and a Movie event is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 10. Gates open at 6:30 p.m., and the movie is expected to begin around 7:30 p.m.

The featured film, “Hocus Pocus,” is the 1993 family Halloween classic about three witches who return to Salem, Massachusetts, after 300 years. Free popcorn will be provided, according to the event announcement.
Organizers said the event also highlights the history of families picnicking in cemeteries, a practice that became popular across the United States, including in San Antonio, during the 19th century.
The screening also celebrates the Cemetery Steward Program, a volunteer initiative focused on caring for and preserving the Historic Eastside Cemeteries.
Attendees are encouraged to bring a blanket and their favorite snacks for the free community event.
City Cemetery No. 1 is located at East Commerce Street and Monumental. Entry is located across from 517 Paso Hondo. Registration is not required.
