SAN ANTONIO - A driver who San Antonio police said chased another car in an incident that resulted in a deadly crash on the North Side Tuesday morning faces a capital murder charge.

A man who was sitting in the back seat of the unnamed suspect's car was killed when the vehicle hit a tree around 3:30 a.m on Vista Valet near Wurzbach Parkway.

A preliminary police report said that moments before the crash, officers received a report about a couple being robbed during a drug deal in a nearby parking lot at Blanco Road and West Avenue.

Police believe the couple tried to get away, but the suspects chased after them.

Both cars crashed.

Three people in the suspect's car -- the driver and two passengers -- were trapped in the wreckage.

"It's my understanding that the fire department cut the three out of the vehicle," San Antonio police Capt. Michael Starnes said.

The driver and one of the passengers were taken to a hospital with serious injuries.

Police did not immediately release the name of the man who was killed.

A fourth person in the car, a woman, was able to climb out of the wreckage. Officers found her disoriented and knocking on doors at a nearby apartment complex.

"We've recovered weapons from the (suspect's) vehicle, and the investigation into what actually happened is ongoing," Starnes said.

The police report said the driver faces multiple charges, including capital murder, stemming from the death of his passenger.

The couple who police believe were the robbery victims didn't suffer any serious injuries.
